New library In Jardine Cresent.
New trees, shrubs and bins are all part of new improvements to Westmede Shopping Centre (Winsford Avenue, Allesley Park).

The popular neighbourhood shopping centre received a welcome upgrade, costing £70,000, thanks to funding from the government's Liveability programme, managed by the City Council and with the support of retail businesses.

Local ward Councillor Roger Bailey, who is also on the Whoberley Ward Forum, is delighted with the Winsford Avenue scheme. He said: "This is a popular shopping centre with a good mix of local shops, where vacant units are quickly snapped up. Unfortunately, the public spaces have not been maintained and this has let the area down. These improvements are very welcome and should send a positive signal that the area is ready for more investment. There is planning permission for a new health centre, a new church building and some housing, so I hope these projects start soon."

The Liveability scheme asked Coventry people to highlight the top priority areas in need of investment and nearly £600,000 was allocated to those centres that came top of the list.
 
Altogether eight shopping centres were chosen including:

Westmede (Whoberley) & Four Closes (Ernesford)
Acorn Street (Stoke Aldermooor)
Ball Hill (Stoke)
Holbrook Lane (Holbrooks)
Quinton Park (Cheylesmore)
Riley Square (Bell Green)
Jardine Crescent New Library(Tile Hill)
Brixham Drive (Wyken)
Other areas being improved with Liveability funding include Memorial Park, Far Gosford Street and Longford Park.

Councillor Hazel Noonan, Cabinet Member for City Services, who is responsible for the Liveability programme said: "People take a pride in their local shopping centres because their local shops reflect their area. Creating good quality public space around local shopping areas can be expensive and often a low priority. The Liveability programme is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a difference.
